Vertical Blinds
by Staff Writer
Vertical blinds have a great deal more options than they used to–no longer are you limited to floppy, lightweight plastic. Now, you can find verticals in sheer fabric, giving you virtually unlimited options for covering patio doors, sliding glass doors, and large windows. Verticals are also great for playing with a room’s perspective. Don’t have the cathedral ceiling you’ve always wanted? Verticals can lengthen the look of a room and keep the eye moving up and down. Using monochromatic colors and verticals is the number one way to make a room appear taller.
Vertical blinds are also wonderful for creating a minimalistic effect. This is a great way to play down colored carpet, if you happen to be stuck with a previous owner’s color choice. Keep your walls white and your window treatments simple, and let the colored carpet become the focus of the room. You can also soften the room’s look with filmy, flowing draperies for a more delicate appearance, even with a bright or loud carpet color.
Another great decorating tip for making a room seem large is to hang vertical blinds on a long window or sliding glass door and place a square mirror on an adjacent wall. Then, treat the mirror as you would a window and place smaller but identically colored vertical blinds over the mirror. This opens up a play of light between the larger and smaller “windows,” and tricks the eye into seeing more space than there is.
When decorating with verticals, don’t forget about color. Fabric-backed vinyl verticals can give any room a shot of much-needed color. If the idea of cobalt blue or bright yellow verticals doesn’t appeal to you, you can still infuse your rooms with color. Choose a softer, more neutral shade like sage green, grey, cream, peach, or dusty rose. Then, accent your room with darker and deeper tones of that color. For example, if you choose sage green verticals, use a deep hunter green for accents like sofa pillows, artwork, candles, or even foliage. At Decorating Depot, we have plenty of color choices in vertical blinds, with options in smooth and ribbed PVC, fabric and embossed PVD, and fabric and PVC-backed verticals.
