Portable Heaters

by Staff Writer

Portable heating technology has come a long way over the past century. Prior to the advent of electricity, portable heating was produced by handheld kerosene lamps, candles, and ad hoc fires. Today, portable heating options abound, from camper heaters to power generation systems on both domestic and industrial scales.

The fuel sources for portable heaters are also diverse. Solar powered heaters capture the sun’s energy and store it as electromagnetic potential. Battery-powered heaters use electrochemical energy to generate heat. Finally, power generators produce heat by tapping into both electrical and chemical gradients. According to the second law of thermodynamics, energy flows “downhill.” In other words, all these energetic processes give us heat as a byproduct.

Tips on Caring for Your Portable Heater
It’s important to follow manufacturer instructions when installing and placing your heat source, since thermal heaters can be fire hazards if improperly handled. Innumerable forest fires have erupted as a result of the poor judgment of campers using flammable heaters. Accidents happen on the industrial scale, as well. Clean your heater regularly using manufacturer approved solvents and ventilate adequately.

Some heaters should never be plugged into extension cords because of voltage incompatibility. In addition, leaks in gas-powered portable heaters can lead to electrical short circuiting. Portable units can be fragile. When putting your unit away for the winter, make sure to store your machine in a clean, dry space, and don’t stack heavy materials on top of it.
