IBM Microdrive

by Staff Writer

The IBM Microdrive is in a class by itself. One of the most unique compact storage solutions ever invented, the IBM Microdrive is actually a mini hard drive, and not a Flash memory card. Many people are confused about the difference. IBM Microdrives records information on to a rotating disk, whereas Flash storage cards have no moving parts and are considered “nonvolatile.”

Despite this difference, an IBM Microdrive is considered in the same class as a Flash card. They are roughly the size of a Compact Flash Type II card, and they can be used in most systems that have slots for Type II Compact Flash. IBM Microdrive cards are made in sizes up to 6 GB, which makes them very popular with people who have large files to transfer.

IBM Microdrives made by Hitachi are excellent at backing up and recording information. For a volatile storage medium, they also have excellent shock resistance and do not consume high amounts of power (which is good news to any laptop user). Many business owners choose IBM Microdrive technology over Compact Flash because it’s a more economical “per gigabyte” solution.

IBM compatible Hitachi Microdrives come equipped with travel kits, which are essential for any mobile employee. They are available in sizes from 3 GB to 6 GB. Synchrotech not only sells IBM Microdrives made by Hitachi but they also manufacture PC Card Type II to Compact Flash Type II adapters, which can be used for both CF Type II cards and IBM Microdrives.
