Silver Dollar Coins
by Staff Writer
The Silver Dollar is arguably the most satisfying U.S. minted coin to collect because of its size and historical significance. When the country’s money system was first established, the One Dollar coin was considered a key denomination. The first and early Silver Dollars are especially valuable because they actually contained their full value in silver. Still the more recent Eisenhower, Susan B. Anthony, and Sacagawea Dollars, even though they contain no silver, hold their own in the collecting world as unique and popular collectibles.
There are an impressive array of Silver Dollars that have been produced throughout our country’s history, such as the first Silver Dollar, the 1794 “Flowing Hair” Dollar, the “Seated Liberty” Dollar (1836-1873), a seminal series with many rarities, and the “Morgan” Dollar (1878-1921), which is widely believe to be the most important (and most widely collected) silver coin in the United States. With the variety of possible Silver Dollar pursuits, the old and rare Silver Dollars offer as much challenge and intrigue as any collector could want. Within each series, there are both extremely rare years, and years that are more easily available. Cost can, of course, vary just as widely.
If you do not want to have to hunt down an old Silver Dollar coin in order to own real silver, the Washington Mint has an easier and equally rewarding alternative– the U.S. Silver Eagle Dollar series. These exquisite creations are uncirculated U.S. Mint coins. They are the first legal tender coin struck by the Federal Government from .999 Pure silver. Their weight of one full ounce of silver will feel awfully good in your hands, while their beautiful design and uncirculated condition are appealing to the eye.
