US Mint Set

The United States Mint packages special sets of its uncirculated coins. When a coin is referred to as uncirculated, it basically means that it has not been used in everyday commerce. The U.S. Mint also uses “uncirculated” to refer to special quality enhancements applied to coins reserved for collections. These coins are manufactured with a higher striking force and are struck earlier from the dyes than the circulated coins. They also receive special cleaning and packaging.

Over the years, the U.S. Mint has offered a number of sets, organized by year of issuance. These sets include a representation of each coin minted in a particular year. The Washington Mint has all U.S. Mint Sets from 1959 to 2005. Our inventory includes all of the rare years–the 1963 and 1964 Mint Sets (which include the last 90 percent silver Dimes, Quarters, and half Dollars), the 1963 Mint Set (the last issue of the Franklin Half-Dollar), and the 1964 Mint Set (which includes the First Kennedy Half -Dollar).

These Mint Sets are very popular. They make thoughtful gifts, and are a great way to commemorate a significant year–the birth year of a child, a significant anniversary or a graduation year. They are also a good way to start coin collecting. They are very satisfying to collect because each year is a complete collection in itself and an exciting part of a yearly tradition. It is also fun to anticipate the special years when a new issue is introduced– like the 1999 State Quarters, the 2000 Sacagawea Golden Dollar or the 2005 Lewis and Clark Nickels.
