Adoptee Search

by Staff Writer

Choosing to search for one’s birth family is one of the most emotionally charged decisions any individual can make. Off-the-chart hopes and fears can rage simultaneously in the imagination. Fantasies of acceptance may do battle with fears of rejection. This situation can be further complicated by the feelings and concerns of others, including those of the adoptive parents, friends and other family members.

However, regardless of the feelings of others–whether positive or negative–searching to find members of one’s birth family is ultimately a private journey. The very act can temporarily reinforce a sense of isolation and separate-ness, a sense of being “different-than.” Even if everyone in an adoptee’s life is wildly supportive, it remains an emotional journey that the adoptee takes alone.

I know this because my life has been personally touched by adoption. I began doing this work to find family members of my own. I found it so fulfilling that I now dedicate my entire life to this process. BirthSearcher.com has now been in the business of reuniting birth-families for eight years.

The process can seem daunting. It’s therefore important to remember that even the longest of journeys is comprised of a sequence of small steps. At every stage, you make the decision either to continue, step back, or simply sit and examine your options. This work proceeds at your pace, no one else’s. It is your journey. However, at BirthSearcher.com, I have blazed a trail that makes it easier for you to find your way, and your own.
