Find Birth Mother

After making the decision to undertake the search for your birth mother, you will be asked time and time again, “Why?” Many of us hear disapproval in the voices of those who ask the question. You may feel the need to explain yourself, or guard your emotional needs with a casual answer that implies your curiosity is merely intellectual. Though this is perfectly understandable, feeling shame about wanting to reconnect with one’s birth family can actually increase the sense of isolation and separateness felt by many adults who were adopted as children.

There are many reasons that adopted children decide to search for their birth mothers. Medical history is one. Curiosities about heritage, culture and customs are another. However, it is equally valid to search for your birth mother simply because you want to know what she looks like, and of course, to hear from her own mouth why she gave you up. You have the right to search and know.

Searches can be motivated at any time, but are usually spurred by other milestones. Many adopted children make the decision to search immediately upon turning 18. Others may have no interest in a search until they get married or decide to have their own children. Many wait until the death of their adoptive parents.
