Strengthen Immune System
by Staff Writer
Another virus which frequently appears in the winter months is the cold virus. Although usually referred to as one virus, there are actually more than 200 different types of cold viruses currently in circulation. Much like influenza, the common cold is an infection of the upper respiratory tract, which can have implications for the entire body. There is no vaccination against the cold, and it is possible to get one of the viruses several times in one year.
Symptoms of the cold usually include congestion, sore throats, coughs, sneezing and watery eyes. Muscle and joint aches are also commonly mentioned by people suffering from a cold. Although the cold itself is not usually dangerous, it can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia and bronchitis. In addition, cold sufferers with a high fever should take extra precautions due to the variety of problems prolonged fevers can bring.
Everyone is capable of catching a cold. Usually, children contract more cold viruses than adults because their immune systems are not fully developed. The average adult gets an estimated two colds per year. This is normal, although there are adults who get significantly more than this. The recurrence of a cold at a frequency of more than twice a year usually indicates an improperly functioning immune system.
In order to prevent and combat colds, it is important to strengthen the immune system. This will not only aid in the reduction of the amount of colds, but also reduce the amount of time the cold is present. Strengthening the immune system is usually done by taking a supplement rich in vitamins and nutrients beneficial to the immune system, such as goji juice.
