Holiday Food Gifts
by Staff Writer
All over the world, important holidays are marked by special foods. Red bean cakes are eaten for the Asian New Year. In Europe, Christmas is the time for cookies and cakes, with different regions and countries each having their own specialties. Americans eat pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving and chocolate eggs at Easter. So when it’s a gift-giving holiday, food makes an excellent offering.
Sometimes a traditional, seasonal food is a great choice, such as a pannetone or a selection of holiday cookies at Christmas. Or you might want to give a basket filled with a variety of imported delicacies. They can be those meant to be eaten on their own, such as confections, or ingredients for other dishes, such as olive oils, balsamic vinegars or fruit syrups.
Themed baskets make excellent gifts. A breakfast basket might contain muffin mix, maple syrup, exquisite jams and jellies, and some really great espresso. Give a basket full of sweets and confections, or choose savory items for an antipasto basket. If you want to splurge on someone special, fill a basket with true delicacies, such as truffles, caviar, or the very best olive oil. Look for products with attractive packaging to up the ante.
You can either order ingredients separately and make your own baskets, or purchase collections already made up. (The latter is especially convenient if you have to mail your gift.) At Gourmet Pantry, we have nine pre-made baskets for you to choose from, and of course many fine foods to choose for the basket you design yourself.
