Home For Troubled Teens
by Staff Writer
Just about everyone behaves defiantly at some point. Stress, hunger, fatigue, or extreme circumstances can cause just about anyone to “act out.” All teens argue, disobey, and rebel at some point. Sporadic oppositional, defiant behavior is actually a normal part of development. Such behavior, however, becomes worrisome when it is consistent. It is a problem when such behaviors begin to be disruptive to normal functioning at home, at school, and in social environments.
Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is marked by uncooperative, hostile and defiant behavior toward authority figures that shows a consistent pattern and interferes significantly with and affects a person’s daily functioning. Teens suffering from ODD are often irritable, angry, and resentful and appear to deliberately attempt to annoy others. They argue excessively and routinely defy rules and requests made by adults. ODD teens are given to tantrums, blame others for their own mistakes, and are likely to seek revenge.
ODD often rears its ugly head during early adolescence. Defiant behavior typically begins at home and all too often parents blame themselves. Eventually, however, ODD teens begin to exhibit problem behaviors at school as well.
Treatment of ODD is often complex and can include therapy, behavior modification techniques, and parent training to provide effective management skills. ODD teens also benefit from help with developing solid problem-solving and coping skills, as well as help with anger management. At Liahona Academy, we combine professional therapy, discipline, positive reinforcement, and love in a structured, safe environment to help teen boys struggling with ODD. We hold our teens accountable for their behaviors and help them seek ways to modify negativity. Let us help your son– get expert help from us at Liahona Academy.
