Schools For Defiant Teens

Schools For Defiant Teens

by Staff Writer

One method frequently used by schools for defiant teens is behavior modification. This method utilizes rewards and consequences to encourage desirable behavior and eliminate the negative. Behavior modification is also used to help individuals learn to respond differently to certain environmental stimuli. Positive and negative reinforcement and cueing are the basic components of the behavior modification format.

To put a stop to negative behaviors, it is important to first observe the behavior and take note of what events or stimuli preceded the negativity. Doing so is helpful in understanding the pattern of the behavior and learning what is necessary to break that pattern. Once the pattern is recognized and understood, a system of rewards and consequences can be constructed.

Often, a behavior modification program is used in conjunction with cognitive therapy to bring about the desired changes. Sometimes medication therapy is employed as well. Behavior modification, accompanied by cognitive therapy, is effective in treating a number of behavioral issues, ADD and ADHD, defiant behavior, and substance abuse. Behavior modification, when using conjunction with positive peer culture, is even more successful.

Consistency is key to the treatment of troubled teens. One of the best things about residential treatment is that the methods used are constant–teens learn what to expect and are not distracted by outside influences or confused by lack of consistency.
