Teen Addictions
by Staff Writer
For many, the difference between substance abuse and addiction is confusing. The disparity between the two is actually very slight, as addiction begins with abuse. Often, teens may begin with using a drug or alcohol (even just a few times) and, without even realizing it, become addicted.
An addiction is characterized by a strong physical and emotional craving for a substance. The addicted teen no longer has any control over his or her drug use and compulsively seeks the addictive substance, regardless of the often dire consequences. Abuse becomes addiction when a person no longer seeks to use a substance to have fun, but instead is dependent upon it.
Dependence on drugs or alcohol is the most obvious sign of an addiction, but there are many other signs as well. An addicted teen may lose interest in previously enjoyed activities, withdraw from family and friends, and develop problems with school. Often, changes in mood, weight, and sleeping habits are among the first signs of teen drug addiction.
