Teen Depression
by Staff Writer
According to mental health experts, four out of every 100 teens struggle with depression. Depression knows no boundaries and can affect people without regard to age, gender, race, or economic background. Depression is a serious condition that shouldn’t be taken lightly. It can affect teens in a number of ways, reducing their quality of life and even leading to physical symptoms. Furthermore, depressed teens are more likely to commit suicide.
The teen years are naturally full of emotional upheaval. Therefore, it can be difficult to immediately determine whether or not a teen is depressed or simply experiencing a temporary blue mood. Everyone has bad days once in a while, but true depression is marked by bad or “down in the dumps” feelings that do not go away and linger for weeks, months, and sometimes years at a time.
In addition to sadness, a depressed person may experience irritability, lack of energy, feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, trouble concentrating, and difficulty sleeping. A depressed teen may show a change in eating patterns, and physical symptoms can include aches and pains, stomachaches, and headaches. A teen struggling with depression may not notice the signs and it is often the people closest to him that notice the changes and first realize extent of the problem.
