Teen Substance Abuse
by Staff Writer
Teen substance abuse is simply a parent’s worst nightmare. As parents, we don’t like to think that our children would ever be involved with drugs. Unfortunately, teen substance abuse is a very real problem, as more than one million teens meet the criteria for drug dependence and close to one million require treatment for alcohol abuse.
In addition to alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, opiates, cocaine, club drugs, stimulants, prescription drugs, and inhalants are among the most common substances abused by teens. The use of illegal drugs often starts between the ages of 12 and 17 and is increasing at an alarming rate. According to experts, the first use of marijuana often occurs during middle school, and alcohol use frequently begins before the age of 12.
Adolescence is typically full of confusion and experimentation. Often, teens will try drugs and alcohol out of curiosity, to feel grown up, or to fit in with peers. It can be very difficult to predict which teens will experiment briefly and which teens will develop serious drug-related problems. For those that do develop alcohol and drug problems, the consequences are severe and can include failure in school, increased risk of drug addiction later in life, greater risk of accidents, unsafe sex, teen pregnancy, suicide, and violence.
