Seed Beads

Seed beads provide a sea of magnificent color for your bead weaving projects. They are made from glass cane that has been heated until it is perfectly smooth. Seed beads are available in numerous sizes and colors. They are sized by number–but the larger the number, the smaller the size of the bead. Most seed beads are either manufactured in the Czech Republic or in Japan. Japanese seed beads tend to have larger holes and a more consistent shape than those from the Czech Republic.

The sizes of Czech beads are slightly smaller than those of Japanese beads. For example, a number 11/0 Czech seed bead will be a little smaller than a number 11/0 Japanese seed bead. If size and shape consistency is important to you, Delica beads may be your ideal choice. Delicas are manufactured by Miyuki Shoji of Japan. They have a cylindrical shape with a smooth finish and feature larger holes than standard Czech seed beads.

Delicas are also available in a wide range of colors, which is a treat for bead weavers. Their uniform shape and larger holes make them a favorite choice for both beginning and advanced bead weavers. The larger holes enable the application stitching techniques that require multiple passes of thread through each bead. Delica beads can be used for both on-loom and off-loom bead weaving techniques.
