Allergy Free Dogs

by Staff Writer

Labradoodles were originally created to be allergy-free companion dogs, but they have come to be so much more than that. They also combine other qualities of the two parent breeds, the standard poodle and the labrador retriever. They have the delicate frame, the fun-loving nature, and the intelligence of the poodle. The labrador, likewise, lent its energetic, boisterous nature and its loyalty.

It was in the 1970s when the call came in to Guide Dogs Victoria in Australia. Someone wanted one of their guide dogs, but the customer was highly allergic to dog hair. The organization then bred a labrador with a poodle, since poodles have long been known to be non-shedding and allergy-friendly. The result was a labradoodle that was able to serve as service dogs for those with allergies.

Nowadays, labradoodles are lumped together with all the other so-called “designer dogs,” but the truth is that they were bred for practical reasons. The fact that they turned out to be incredibly adorable was just a side effect. This sets them apart from the other cross-breeds, like the cockapoo (cocker spaniel and poodle), the chiweiner (chihuahua and dachshund, the puggle (pug and beagle), and the chowggle (beagle and chow chow).
