Olympic Taekwondo

by Staff Writer

What many people do not know is that there are two primary Taekwondo associations: the WTF (World Taekwondo Federation) and the ITF (International Taekwondo Federation). Although the amount of practitioners within each federation is relatively equal, WTF rules are what are considered to be Olympic Taekwondo. Practitioners of the ITF style of Taekwondo focus on forms developed by its founder, General Choi, while WTF practitioners learn Taeguks.

One of the primary reasons the WTF was able to establish their form of Taekwondo as an Olympic sport is because of its more “full contact” approach. The ITF is more of a “semi-contact” sport, although both forms share many similar techniques. In fact, many practitioners train and compete within both federations without it posing any sort of problem.

Being Olympic Taekwondo, the WTF version of the sport has increased in popularity since the year 2000. Schools have flourished across the country, with countless enthusiasts flocking to learn this effective and acrobatic art. MartialArts-101.com offers a new way to expand your learning of Taekwondo by providing an online resource that includes instructional videos, articles and tips to improve the quality of your training.

Focusing primarily on Olympic Taekwondo, MartialArts-101.com’s videos showcase the skills of WTF Master Penev.
