Taekwondo Info

Although many Taekwondo beginners are initially attracted to the sport because of its acrobatic forms and effectiveness for self-defense, the art also has a rich history that all students should take the time to appreciate. In truth, the study of any martial art should also include the discovery of its historical significance. In the case of Taekwondo, many of its moves are based on historical or cultural heritage.

All martial arts stem from man’s need to defend himself, especially when unarmed. The earliest forms of Taekwondo can be traced back to the Koguryo Dynasty (37 BC-668 AD). Although the art was not codified the way it is now, it was during this era that the seeds were initially sown. Throughout the following centuries, the art form went through a number of significant evolutions, yet the greatest of these changes wouldn’t occur until the mid-20th century.

In 1965, General Choi Hong-Hi created the Korean Taekwondo Association (KTA) and required the country’s military and police to train in the art. The general later fled Korea, forming the ITF in the United States, and the KTA evolved into the WTF. Over the next 30 years, the sport became more organized, with the WTF focusing greatly on sparring and regulation. This led to the acceptance of the sport into the Olympics in 2000.

The evolution of Taekwondo is truly a remarkable story and as one looks deeper into it, the significance of many of its moves gains greater meaning. MartialArts-101.com offers practitioners an online haven where they can learn more about the history of the sport while improving their abilities.
