Salem Massachusetts Real Estate

Salem Massachusetts Real Estate

by Staff Writer

Salem was initially formed in 1626 after a number of fishermen, led by Roger Conant, left their settlement on Cape Ann in search of a more viable home. They found what they were looking for on the northern coast of Massachusetts, where the Naumkeag River connected to the Atlantic Ocean. Although the settlement was named Salem after the Hebrew word for peace “Shalom,” it rapidly gave birth to one of the most famous and darkest moments in American history: the Salem witch trials.

As famous as Salem is for the trials, the city was truly an early hub for economic development. In fact, by the eighteenth century, the city became a major fishing and maritime community. By the end of the century, Salem was one of the largest cities in the burgeoning United States and one of the richest by far. Although a fire swept through the city during the early twentieth century, many of Salem’s historical buildings remain intact, making it an essential stop for tourists interested in our country’s rich history.

Today, Salem remains a vibrant city, dedicated to preserving its past, while moving towards the future. As much as the city relies on the witch trials to keep its tourist appeal, it is a beautiful community in of itself. From the famed Pickering House to the House of Seven Gables, American history surrounds you almost anywhere you look. Not only is Salem a wonderful place to visit, but it is also a great community for residents.
