Global Warming Issues
by Staff Writer
One’s first reaction to global warming may be one of mild concern. After all, some might argue, how bad would it be to have the Earth warmer by a couple of degrees? The truth is, though, that even this seemingly minor shift in overall temperature can bring about a number of serious environmental issues that may or may not be reversible.
One major global warming issue is the rise in ocean levels. As the Earth’s atmosphere and surface ocean temperature rises this causes the water trapped in glaciers to melt in incremental amounts. This gradual melting ultimately adds water to the ocean, and thus raises the sea level across the globe. This has a ripple effect, causing a number of serious issues in coastal communities.
The most immediate issue surrounding a rise in ocean level concerns cities and communities that are built on or around the coast. Cities like Venice, Italy, and New Orleans, Louisiana, are prime examples of cities that will most immediately feel the effects of a rise in ocean level. Some South Pacific islands–Tebua Tarawa and Abanuea–have already been swallowed up by rising ocean levels.
There are a number of other dire issues surrounding the current global warming trend. Polar bears are facing increased difficulties as are the species inhabiting coral reefs around the globe. All signs point to this being just the beginning of a potentially destructive cycle. There are things that individuals can do, however, to help in the battle against global warming. By joining our team of virtual marchers here at stopglobalwarming.org, you can do your part to effect policy change that can help slow down or even prevent further damage from being done.
