Dashboard Software

“Dashboard software” is a term used to describe a specific type of software interface that contains all relevant data, like the dashboard of a car. Recently, dashboard software has become more and more ubiquitous. In addition to being used in a number of different personal computer systems, it is also making a strong showing in integrated business software solutions, such as the ones created by business process management suites.

Dashboard software is usually designed to be semi-transparent, like a cell or sticker that can be placed over existing software and moved around as the user desires. As soon as the dashboard program is activated, all the other programs that the user is working with fall into the background, to make room for the individual dashboard modules.

These modules can handle a number of tasks–in fact, one of the main attractions of the dashboard form of interface is the ease with which it allows its users to create and incorporate new pieces of software. So, if you find yourself continually looking up the temperature outside your office building, you might design a dashboard module that automatically links itself up to a source of information that can tell you just that. This module can then be shared with other members of your organization.

There are hundreds and even thousands of dashboard modules out there, most of which can be accessed and used freely. These shareware dashboard modules cover tasks like word searches, calendars, even flight reservations. They are compellingly designed, easy to use, and generally well-received by their users.
