Enterprise Application Integration
by Staff Writer
One way to describe a company is to call it a network of different applications. In order for a company to run smoothly, each of its constituent applications must be able to work with one another, speak with one another, and learn from one another. Because of this necessity, companies have found it very important to find a way to make their applications communicate seamlessly.
This kind of seamless communication can be achieved using a technique known as enterprise application integration. An “enterprise application” is simply an application that covers a single task, and which can be accessed by a number of different departments. By integrating these pieces, a picture of overall company efficiency begins to take shape.
The most common way for companies to achieve enterprise application integration is using some sort of generic solution. These can include programs that are specifically designed to serve as middlemen (programs called “middleware”), taking information and signals from individual parts and relaying it to other programs. Occasionally, individual programs with individually-designed “tails” of code can also be used to achieve enterprise application integration.
Enterprise application integration is one of the primary goals of business process management. By modelling and automating the different steps in a company’s process, an entire application becomes simply a matter of finding the right piece of middleware. Once this middleware has been put into effect, individual pieces of software can be moved around and shifted easily.
