Middleware

by Staff Writer

Middleware is a term used to designate company software that helps handle interactions between an over-arching company operating system and various component applications. Think of it, in a way that the name itself suggests, as a kind of electronic middleman. Just as a middleman is a businessperson who facilitates a deal between two parties who might not have otherwise been able to communicate with one another, so middleware helps applications that might not ordinarily be compatible work together.

This is extremely important in large business architectures, since so many companies use a variety of different programs to serve all their needs. Although most often these programs are compatible, many times there are issues. And as anyone who has been in this situation can tell you, nothing can be more draining of company time and money than tiny computer compatibility issues.

Let’s say, for example, that you are working on a word processing document. You save the document, and then want to use some of the information held within on your next presentation. But if your presentation and word processing software aren’t compatible, you could spend the rest of your morning and even day trying to get your project up and running.

This is actually a relatively harmless example. Imagine, on the other hand, if the question is a compatibility error between your software and the customer’s! Because there are so many different types of web browsers, plug-ins, and other programs out there, it is very important that a company be equipped with versatile middleware.
