Rules Engine

by Staff Writer

Updating and implementing a business process management rules engine requires a solid set of heuristics. Even if you have modeled your business process well, using easy-to-understand visual cues, and develop a souped-up process engine to task applications to various people within your corporate hierarchy, if you lack a thoroughly vetted, updatable rules engine, your BPM can crash or go way off track.

Basically, the rules engine acts as the brain of the BPM system. It enforces how processes flow from one to the next, and it makes sure that processes retain direction and stay within their swim lanes. Automated rules engines are great for making sure that particular governmental agencies stay within delegated regulations, for instance. Automated engines are not so good at taking on more sophisticated, multi-platform abstract policies.

Of course, the big question with designing a BPM rules engine is how and when to intervene in the engine’s initiatives. If you rely on too much human input to run the business process, you could slow down the whole system and waste company resources. If you automate too heavily, on the hand, you could plow through towards a negative, ridiculous, or insufficient solution.

To protect the BPM process, it is good to run rules engine simulations through a what-if feature to test for bottlenecks in the system. By searching for potentially dangerous scenarios and experimenting and again and again with the engine’s capacity to do work, you will likely boost its capabilities as well as sniff out some fairly worrisome errors before they impact your BPM process.
