Total Quality Management Tools

Total Quality Management (TQM) is a management strategy that aims to put quality first. To do this, it stresses the constant awareness of quality in all levels of a business, from employees to management, and in all sectors. Its innovative and results-oriented approach has been taken up and adopted by companies in many different industries, including government and educational sectors, and at NASA.

For most manufacturing organizations, Total Quality Management is a difficult thing to implement without the aid of quantified figures. After all, how can you represent statistically that something is “better” than something else? The solution that most TQM adopters use is to begin with a representative sample, which can then be examined according to a variety of different pre-set parameters.

However, when looking at sample products and what causes them to fail under particular stimuli, it is important to keep the eye on an eventual product. This way, cheap solutions can be used as a sort of halfway point between what customers are looking for and what the business itself is able to provide. Since each product has a general level of quality that the company wants to achieve (which will probably be much different from a competitor’s) Total Quality Management is always careful to keep in mind relative standards and expectations.

TQM has proven a popular business management solution, causing a proliferation of different computerized Total Quality Management tools to arise. Though it may seem counter-intuitive, TQM products are usually much cheaper than other products, since the number of repairs sent in by customers drops dramatically. The TQM system has also found great success abroad, particularly in Japan.
