UDDI
by Staff Writer
UDDI stands for Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration. Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration is an initiative that many internet-based businesses have undertaken together in an attempt to compile a huge list of services and applications. It allows businesses from any industry to post information about themselves, and how it uses the Internet for business purposes.
UDDI information usually consists of entries in three main categories, which have been given familiar names. The UDDI White Pages lists simple contact information, such as name and address–just as might be listed in a “normal” white pages directory. This level of information reflects one of UDDI’s initial goals: that the Internet provide a comprehensive arena for goods and services in which consumers could be linked to businesses directly.
The next level of information is the UDDI Yellow Pages. This level is much more detailed, and contains certain specific taxonomies that are industry-defined. These descriptions may not make sense to the average user, but probably do to more informed surfers of the UDDI database.
Finally, the tech-heavy UDDI Green Pages provide specific service information. This level is mostly accessed by those able to decode the highly industry-specific jargon. The three-level approach is designed to provide interested consumers with whatever information about a business that they need. Though not everyone has been the hugest UDDI fan, supporters maintain that UDDI is the only index that provides the data models that this kind of information requires.
