Workflow Management

by Staff Writer

The science of workflow management has expanded incredibly over the past decade and a half, as more and more corporations, governmental institutions, and NGOs tap into the power of BPM software suites. Yet before you start aligning processes, setting up engines to handle traffic, scaling for clients, and managing your finances, it may behoove you to start at step one. Take an inventory of all the needs and desires of your organization as they currently stand. Creating this exhaustive list will free up the “RAM” of your organization’s brain structure.

This to-do list can be far reaching. It may include everything from your need to create quarterly reports for investors to your 10-year goal plan to your inventory needs and human resources. Obviously, it helps to get all members of your corporate team working together to create such a comprehensive list. However, once you have all of your goals and tasks written on paper, you can then organize your workflow management without leaving out anything.

Does it really matter if you include the small stuff, like paperwork to sign and inventory orders to fill? Although including these factors on your to-do-list may seem superfluous, evidence suggests that the best workflow management protocols are built on comprehensive platforms. In laymen’s term, when your desk is clean, you get more work done.

There are numerous structures you can use to organize your workflow, from sophisticated BPM software suites which create “swim lanes” for processes, to collaborative management approaches that draw upon the resources of multiple media, to intuitive, small-scale coordination approaches, such as person-to-person email chats. Finally, you can use process analytics to parse workflow management strategies and examine their effectiveness.
