Business Process Management

Business Process Management

by Staff Writer

What are the keys for developing a flexible, redundant business process management (BPM) architecture? First of all, it is critical to think for the long term. Instead of getting caught up in the process software and process engine logistics, it is important to review long term goals and strategies with your managers. By crafting a vision for your process, you will be much better positioned to create short term, incremental goals that line up with your philosophy of management.

The next step is to work backwards to design a thorough, streamlined operation that you can update as new information comes in and as the shape and character of your operation changes. Of course, it is difficult to predict business dynamics, even over the short term. Instead of rigidly defining management expectations, therefore, many BPM experts recommend creating a five-state system to modify your processes and keep appropriate applications within designated swim lanes.

The business process management modeler is a text or graphics building block that allows operators to construct process diagrams. Simply put, the model is the alphabet of your BPM approach. The next step is the process engine, which designates how to task various applications. Supporting the process engine is the rules engine, which evaluates processes and ensures that they stay focused on goals. Fourth is the simulator, which creates hypotheticals and alerts the process system to potential flaws. Finally, there are the so-called dashboards, which provide output to relevant individuals within the specified process. Bear in mind that no BPM solution, no matter how well engineered, can perfectly model and predict outcomes. Therefore, coordinate any BPM approach with effective non-automated management for maximum benefit.
