Scrapbook Cardstock

by Staff Writer

Cardstock is the perfect paper to use to create scrapbooks. When used as the page itself, scrapbook cardstock provides a sturdy base that is strong enough to carry the weight of the photos, embellishments and trims you’ll be adding. It also stands up better than flimsier papers to the handling it will receive, both in the making and in the viewing.

Scrapbook cardstock adds dimension and texture to your page as well. At Jackkyll Scraps, I have a unique selection of textured card stock for you to choose from. Textures include linen, canvas, washboard, orange peel, corduroy, criss-cross, groove, weave and grass cloth. There are also fiber and sparkle papers, which are not textured, but have elements that add dimension.

The fact that scrapbook cardstock has such great body, similar to that of photo paper, allows you to add dimension in other ways as well. The use of glue dots allows you to affix elements of your layout with a little space between them and the basic page, giving you a slight shadow-box effect that won’t be crushed when the scrapbook is closed. Scrapbook cardstock also stands up well to embossing (see the tutorial on the website.)

You can also create raised designs by using a stencil. Simply lay the stencil on your work surface, and then lay the card stock over it, right side up. Trace around the stencil with a plain stylus. You can use just a part of it or combine parts of several stencils to create new designs. Plastic stencils work best for this technique.
