Textured Cardstock

by Staff Writer

Textured cardstock adds a dramatic extra dimension to any paper project, whether it’s a greeting card, party invitation, scrapbook page, paper construction or photo frame. At Jackkyll Scraps, I’ve got some unique new textures for you to choose from. These include linen, weave, grass cloth, groove, criss-cross and canvas.

Linen is an excellent choice for greeting cards, because it is textured on both sides of the sheet. All the other types are textured on one side and smooth on the other. This allows you to make some lovely subtle contrasts in texture, by using two sides of the same color.

Textured cardstock is also great for matting pictures. You can create a professional-looking–yet purely individual–framed print by painting an inexpensive frame or gluing objects to it, then using textured cardstock, perhaps in two or more layers, to create the matting. You might, for instance, cover a frame with tiny seashells, use Bazzill Gulf in canvas texture as the primary mat, with Lily Pond in grass cloth texture peeping out as the secondary mat. Use it to frame a photo of you and your loved ones at the beach.

Using pastels or even ordinary crayons to color, draw or write on textured paper gives you a wonderful extra dimension. Hold your implement lightly so you don’t fill in the depressions in the textured card stock. Deep textures such as groove or grass cloth work best. If you used pastels, spray it lightly with fixative so it won’t rub off. Don’t forget to post your creations in the gallery!
