Ladys Rolex President

by Staff Writer

The Rolex Company was founded 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis in Great Britain. It was first called Wilsdorf & Davis. Hans Wilsdorf was not Swiss, nor was he a watchmaker. Originally they imported Hermann Aegler’s Swiss watch movements to England and put them in other watchmakers’ cases. These watches were sold to jewelers who put their own names on the dial. Early watches from the Wilsdorf and Davis are usually marked “W&D” inside the case back.

The watch model that became known as the ladies’ Rolex President began production in 1945. The original ladies’ President watch was available in white, yellow, and pink gold, as well as platinum. Early versions of the President Rolex had a bulky appearance with a somewhat bulging back.

The case design hasn’t changed much, except to slenderize the back and to add what is called a “hack” feature in the ’70s. This feature allows the user to stop the second hand in order to set the time to an accurate source. The ladies’ President Rolex features factory diamond accents, a variety of faces, and a sapphire crystal. The bezel may be fluted gold or diamond.
