The world of wristwatches was completely changed in the early 1900s, largely because of Rolex, SA. Wristwatches became everyday accessories, quickly gaining ground over pocket watches and making them seem old-fashioned.
One of the biggest events in wristwatch history happened in 1927, when Mercedes Gleitze swam the English Channel wearing Rolex’s Oyster watch. The Oyster was a new water-resistant watch with a crown that screwed down, making it completely watertight. The Oyster was in perfect shape after the swim, which lasted more than 14 hours. The subsequent front-page news about her swim brought ladies’ Rolex watches into the forefront of public interest.

Another sportsman helped bring Rolex watches into the celebrity limelight. Jean-Claude Killy, an Olympic gold medalist in 1968 and a member of the Sports Hall of Fame, was said to have owned 25 Rolex watches. He indicated that his favorite was the 6036. In fact, collectors refer to the Rolex reference number 6036 the “Jean Claude Killy.”

In 1952, Rolex’s Oyster watch once again made history when Sir Edmund Hillary wore one as he became the first man to climb Mount Everest. Rolex, perhaps more than any other watch making company, understood the importance that celebrity status could play in the popularity of their watches.
