When Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex, learned that Mercedes Gleitze was going to swim the English Channel, he gave her a Rolex Oyster to wear and hired a photographer to record the event. Wilsdorf took out a front-page ad in London’s Daily Mail as a testimonial to the watch, which had remained waterproof and kept perfect time.
