Betty Crocker has been a household name since 1921. Introduced by the Washburn Crosby Company to personalize the organization, Betty Crocker is now a trademark of General Mills. Despite being a fictional character, Betty Crocker was given a voice in 1924, with the help of Marjorie Husted. A radio program, which ran for 29 years, was developed around the persona in 1924.
Primarily, Betty Crocker is seen as an authoritative figure on cooking. In fact, the General Mills Corporation has put out a variety of cookbooks under the name of Betty Crocker, all of which have enjoyed significant success throughout the years. In addition to providing consumers with traditional American recipes, Betty Crocker cookbooks also give advice on cooking essentials like proper utensils, mixing terms, and food preparation.
The original Betty Crocker Cookbook remains the most popular. The first edition debuted after the end of the scripted radio show, in 1955. This cookbook now contains over 1,000 time-tested recipes. Modern editions have even seen the inclusion of special sections devoted to vegetarian eating and nutritional information. In current publications, there are also more than 300 low fat and designated fat recipes.
To cater to the growing Spanish-speaking market in the United States, Betty Crocker released the Cocina Cookbook. This 304-page book presents 125 traditional American recipes in a bilingual format. Designed to promote family-togetherness in Latin American communities, the Cocina Cookbook has received its fair share of criticism from the cooking community. Many cooking professionals have questioned the necessity for such a cookbook, as well as its possible underlying intentions.
