Country Home Decorating
by Staff Writer
Country home decorating is the antithesis of the clean lines and minimalist designs of contemporary spaces. Some people find modern decorating to be a little too uninviting and more appropriate for a nightclub or upscale hotel than a home. Country decorating, on the other hand, offers a charming, welcoming feeling to all who enter then space.
Being a traditional or “old fashioned” style of decorating, country home decorating works best when older, original elements of a home are present, such as hardwood floors and classic woodwork. Unfortunately, not all who desire a country-themed home have these essentials to work with. Fortunately, even a cookie-cutter condominium or townhouse can be transformed into a country home retreat with a few well-chosen accessories.
A classic country living room should be warm and comfortable. Start with a large floral-print sofa and integrate a wing chair or rocking chair for additional seating. A padded ottoman will provide a place to rest your feet while reading the newspaper; add a tray and it will hold drinks too. For additional storage, consider wooden tripod end tables to complete the look.
In the kitchen, wood cabinets are necessary for a country kitchen look. These could be stained a rich wooden color, like medium oak or cherry, or painted if you’re feeling more adventurous. Choose round knobs for the doors. Black hardware is recommended as it will best match the look of a country style wrought iron chandelier. Finally, visit antique shops and flea markets to find vintage glassware to display, or even kitschy signage from yesteryear to celebrate the past. Large, white porcelain pieces will recall the farmhouses of yesteryear.
