When completely renovating a bathroom, some homeowners are surprised to learn it costs anywhere from $500 to $1,000 to move fixtures, such as a toilet. However, if the existing layout of a bathroom isn’t as comfortable as it could be, now would be the time to make changes. Use paper to map a new layout for the room, and then walk through the space envisioning how things will change.

During a complete bathroom renovation, consider updating light fixtures as well. To make the bathroom feel bright and spacious, place wall sconces on all sides of the mirrors. Recessed lighting will also brighten a room, including the areas that a traditional ceiling fixture won’t illuminate. Some recessed fixtures are even graded for shower installation, so a walk-in shower can feel bright and inviting.

Once the layout and lighting have been updated, the decor of the bathroom must be addressed. A contemporary yet functional bathroom may feature a walk-in shower with a glass door, a granite countertop with a wood vanity, and a tile floor. In more elegant, formal bathrooms, marble is a fine flooring choice. However, glossy-surface floors like marble are quite slippery when wet. Consequently, textured surfaces work best on bathroom floors.

The bathroom fixtures will also dramatically affect the overall look of the room. Those with truly modern sensibilities should select streamlined fixtures made from industrial materials, like stainless steel, aluminum or chrome. For a more vintage look, consider elaborate designs finished in antique brass or pewter.
