Home Improvement Store
by Staff Writer
Today’s home improvement stores offer consumers more than products. Many also provide courses that can help homeowners take repairs into their own hands and possibly save money in the process. Topics commonly covered include installing tile, the proper method for hanging wallpaper, and installing a low-flow toilet. While most are open to men and women, some offer do-it-herself seminars that encourage women to attempt their own repairs.
Retailers that offer do-it-yourself advice in-store may have transported the information over to their websites as well. Working on a project from home with advice at your fingertips makes it possible to follow along step-by-step and work towards saving money that would have otherwise gone to a contractor. Projects can range from simply changing the hardware on kitchen cabinets to installing an underground sprinkler system.
Most home improvement stores also carry a wide range of samples for their customers. Full tiles, sample jars of paint, and carpet squares could all be taken home for examination, although some samples come with a nominal fee. However, discovering that a product doesn’t look as appealing under the natural and artificial lighting conditions in the home negates the cost of any sample.
A problem many encounter when working on a home renovation is financing. Some stores even offer their customers store-specific credit cards for making home improvement purchases. While an ordinary credit card could carry an interest rate of 18 percent, a store promotion may give shoppers no interest for six months. When handled responsibly, such a card could prove a viable source of financing.
