Home Remodeling Costs

by Staff Writer

A kitchen is without a doubt one of the most expensive rooms in a home to renovate. That’s because there are so many appliances and fixtures to redo. Things to consider include cabinets, countertops, appliances, the sink and faucet, and the flooring. When creating a budget, remember to set aside up to $10,000 for labor depending on the size of the job.

If you’re after a kitchen update rather than a complete remodel, you could complete the job for around $5,000 by doing some of the work yourself. If you have outdated cabinets, consider your options for refinishing them. Old cabinets can be rejuvenated by simply painting or staining them and adding new hardware.

Keeping the cabinets in your kitchen can save you anywhere from $2,000 to $30,000 depending on the size of the room and the cabinets chosen. This allows you to splurge on other purchases. One upgrade you will certainly appreciate is granite. Granite is more expensive than laminate at $50 to $100 per square foot, but it’s also much stronger. Hot pots from the stove and pans directly from the oven can be placed on a granite countertop with no consequences.

While an upgrade like granite certainly looks beautiful, it has practical benefits as well. This is what you should ask yourself before making any kitchen upgrade: is the purchase functional and practical? A large gas stove with six burners and two ovens is certainly a status symbol, but if you live alone or don’t cook very often, the money would be better spent elsewhere.
