Home Repair And Remodeling
by Staff Writer
All home repair and remodeling projects should be approached cautiously. Far too many fly-by-night contractors spring up to swindle a few families before leaving town with their life savings. Since it’s so difficult–if not impossible–to get your money back afterwards, you should spend plenty of time researching contractors before choosing one.
Word-of-mouth from people you trust is the best way to make a short list of potential contractors, so talk with friends and family about the individuals they’ve dealt with. Look closely at the work they did. Next, get quotes from each of the contractors. These should be printed on official business stationary and never scribbled on the back of a business card. Finally, choose the one that’s best suited to the job. In the contracting world, a jack of all trades is oftentimes a master of none.
If your home repair and remodeling project is multi-faceted, then it’s likely worth the extra money to hire sub-contractors who specialize in a certain area. For instance, during a bathroom renovation, hire one person to do the drywall, another to do the tile work, and someone to do the plumbing. You may find that these people are in and out quickly since they’re so skilled at their trade. This could in turn reduce the duration of your remodeling project.
It’s important to stay involved with any renovation. If you notice something questionable, ask your contractor about it. If it’s an issue he was aware of, he’ll fill you in on the details. If it’s a problem he overlooked, he should fix it. If days or weeks go by with no change, it’s time to contact your lawyer. Although no one wants to resort to such a tactic, it’s imperative that you protect your interests.
