Housekeeping Tips

by Staff Writer

If you perform routine housekeeping jobs on a daily basis, you can prevent the work from accumulating and seeming overwhelming. For example, doing your dishes daily prevent stains from setting in. Similarly, filing papers as you receive them ensures that you will not have to spend hours going through thick stacks of old bills and bank statements, trying to determine what is and is not important.

Different household tasks need to be performed at different intervals. While some activities, such as vacuuming, should be performed each week, other activities, such as cleaning walls, need only be done once a month. Other chores, such as checking the weatherstripping on your windows and cleaning your exterior doors, can be done seasonally. By organizing your activities into different timeframes, you can be sure that no task is overlooked.

One of the most challenging tasks for many homeowners is organizing the clutter in their homes. Many people will decide to do this once a year as part of their “spring cleaning,” but you can reduce the burden of organization by doing so in smaller increments. Sorting items into large categories, such as garbage, things to be stored, and things to be donated or sold will make it easier for you to organize the loose items in your home.

If you are having a hard time parting with some of the items that you own, you should develop a reasonable standard to evaluate their usefulness and then stick to it. If you cannot remember the last time that you used something, it may be time to discard it or put it into long term storage. Get the other people in your family to weigh in and be tough if your pack-rat tendencies are making everyone feel crowded. For more housekeeping tips, keep browsing the HousekeepingChannel.com.
