It seems like it’s always time to do laundry. Between work and play, we go through clothes quickly and our clothes go through a lot. Though laundry is a fairly simple process with a washer and dryer, there are some laundry cleaning tips that will help you get the most life out of your clothes.

Most people prefer to wash their white clothes separate from their colored pieces. This way, the ink from colored clothing doesn’t bleed onto the whites. To keep your whites very white, you should use some bleach when washing. Use exactly the amount shown on the bleach bottle and fill your washer half full with water to dilute it. Too much bleach can start to corrode your socks and shirts.

Read washing and drying instructions on your clothes carefully. Many manufacturers put specific instructions on their tags. Shirts can shrink and pants can get damaged if these instructions aren’t followed carefully. Be sure to check what water temperature is suggested for each piece of clothing and group you laundry together by what needs to be washed in cold and what needs to be washed in warm water.

Don’t let your laundry pile up. If you find that you are constantly spending whole days doing huge loads of laundry, set a goal for yourself. Challenge yourself never to have a full hamper for more than one day. Once the hamper gets filled, it’s time to bring it to the washer.
