Window Cleaning Tips

by Staff Writer

Keeping your windows clean isn’t just about making sure they look good. When windows become covered with debris and dust, these sediments block out natural sunlight. A clean window not only will give a lovely view in and out of your home, but will help keep heating costs down by filling your house with rays of sunlight.

When cleaning your windows, you should take the time to clean the entire window–not just the glass panes. Use a small paint brush to clear away debris that gets into the channels between the windows and the window ledge. A moist paper towel or rag should be used to wipe down the channel after the debris has been cleared. Thoroughly wipe down the entire frame of the window, getting rid of dust that may prevent it from closing properly. If the locks on your windows, which help keep heat in during cold spells, become stuck, remove the locks and soak them in warm water to clean them.

Treat your windows with gentle care. A squeegee is actually the best way to wash your windows. While rags or towels can leave unsightly streaks, a squeegee leaves no residual mark. There’s no need to purchase expensive glass cleaner, either. You can get your windows glistening with a homemade combination of dish detergent, rubbing alcohol, and warm water.

If you live in a house with hard-to-reach or extra tall windows, there is a simple way to keep them clean. A window scrubber is a handy device that was designed to scrub your window and dispense cleaning solution at the same time. Attach the window scrubber to an extension pole and you will be able to clean almost any window in your house without having to get on a ladder! Excellent tips on window cleaning. May I suggest adding a couple of table spoons of household cleaning ammonia to your cleaning formula? Ammonia really cuts through common window grime. If you are a smoker or heat your house with oil, or if your windows have a little smoke on them from a fire place, ammonia is a life saver!
