California Insurance Continuing Education

California Insurance Continuing Education

by Staff Writer

Every state has different standards that dictate the requirements necessary to become and remain a licensed insurance agent. These requirements entail a certain amount of continuing education course work in the field, as well as the successful completion of any exams required for certification. Most states usually have an educational prerequisite as well, requiring that applicants possess at least a bachelor’s degree in a related subject.

After meeting pre-licensing requirements, California requires licensees to earn at least 25 hours of continuing education credits annually for the first four years. After this period, licensees have their continuing education measured in two-year terms based on birthday month, and are expected to complete 30 hours of courses per term. The courses completed during this period must be approved for the specific type of license in order to count towards the licensee’s overall hours. While California requires 25 continuing education credit hours for the first four years, and 30 hours for every two year term thereafter, the state also accepts excess course hours towards a license. Excess hours can be used towards the following term, or even to help reinstate a license that has expired and become inactive.

Continuing education providers, such as A Plus Online, an Internet educational resource, can help licensees ensure that they are completing the proper course work for their license. After completing the educational requirements, licensee’s then take an examination in order to prove their knowledge of the subject. California applicants are urged to complete their hours and take their exams at least 60 days prior to the expiration of their current license. After the completion of the exam, the continuing education provider is responsible for submitting the course completion roster to the California Department of Insurance. In addition, the California Department of Insurance requires continuing education providers to keep student course completion records for a minimum of five years.

The California Department of Insurance requires that an exam be successfully completed at the conclusion of each term. In California, the exams do not need to be monitored by a proctor. Also, insurance agents are permitted to complete the test as an open-book exam.
