Smoky Mountain Information
by Staff Writer
In 1934, the federal government created Great Smoky Mountain National Park, making official what had been known long before–the value and beauty of these majestic mountains. Since then, the area has become one of the most popular national parks, seeing nearly nine million visitors each year. The famous Appalachian Trail runs through the park, as do many other hiking trails of varying difficulty.
The Smokies are a unique climate, thanks in part to the high humidity in the area. Thanks to the elevation, this humidity is usually present as a nice mist, which from a distance looks like the smoke that the mountains were named for. There is much more water in the area than in other parts of the Appalachians, and as a result, the area is rich with many species of plant and animal.
In fact, scientists estimate that there may be as many as 90,000 undocumented species in the heart of the Smokies in addition to the 10,000 species that we already know about! With such a biological marvel on our hands, it’s lucky that the area has been under federal protection for so long. There are few places on earth where you can enjoy such a wonderful natural attraction that is so pristine.
When you come to the park, make sure that you arrange your lodging at Smoky Mountain Country Club. Even if you spend your time during the day roughing it and exploring the park, at night you’ll be glad to unwind in our luxury condos and eat at our acclaimed Oaks Restaurant. So come enjoy the beauty of the Smokies, and be sure to do it in style from your comfy condo at Smoky Mountain Country Club.
