Horse Race Betting
by Staff Writer
When you are betting on horse races, there is a bewildering variety of different kinds of bets available. This is part of what makes horse race betting so exciting and invigorating, but it can also be quite a headache for the newcomer or novice better. Don’t worry–below is a simple explanation of some of the more common kinds of horse race bets.
The three most simple bets are win, place, and show. A win bet (sometimes called a “single” bet in the U.K.) simply means that you select a given horse to finish in first place. A place bet gives you a bit more leeway–with this type of bet, you win if your horse places first or second. The show bet is similar (but with a lower payoff), where you win if your horse is in the first three finishers.
Other popular groups of bets, with significantly higher winnings and greater difficulties, are Pick 3 and Pick 6 bets. A Pick 3 bet pays off when you correctly select the winners of three consecutive races. Pick 6 bets, which at certain tracks can yield payoffs of hundreds of thousands of dollars, require the bettor to select the winners of six consecutive races.
A third group of popular bets include the quinella, exacta (also known as the perfecta), trifecta, and superfecta. A quinella is a bet on two horses to finish first and second in either order. To win on an exacta, you must pick two horses to finish first and second in an exact order. Much more challenging are the trifecta and superfecta bets, in which you bet on the exact finishing order of the first three and four horses respectively.
