Cloth Diapers
by Staff Writer
There are three basic types of cloth diapers. All-in-one (or AIO), fitted, and prefold diapers are the kinds that you will encounter if you’re looking into cloth options for your baby–though you may also read about flat, pocket, and contour diapers. How much money you have to spend, the amount of time you have to care for the diapers, and whether making baby care easier for a sitter/childcare facility is a priority are the factors that are likely to shape your decision about which type to use. Cotton Babies offers a wealth of information–as well as the best of each of these types of diapers–so that you can make the best decision for your family, your baby, and the environment.
Benefits of Each of the Types of Cloth Baby Diapers
All-in-one cloth diapers are the easiest and most convenient to use, with the obvious downside that they are the most expensive. They are essentially like disposable diapers, except that you can wash and re-use them so they are much kinder to the environment than disposables. They are usually adjustable with Velcro closures or snaps, but there are still S, M, L, and XL sizes. You will need to upgrade as your baby grows. You should also be aware if you use AIO’s that their drying time is longer than other cloth diapers.
Fitted cloth diapers are the middle option in terms of both price and convenience. You don’t have to do any folding yourself, but you have to buy separate waterproof diaper covers and put them together with the fitted cloth insert. They are absorbent enough for most babies during the day, and usually it’s easy to add a diaper insert for extra absorbency at night. They’re comfortable for babies, and (like other cloth diapers) also help to prevent diaper rash. Pocket diapers are a popular subset of fitted cloth diapers. Inside the fleece lining is a pocket. You can place an absorbent material in that pocket for extra protection. We recommend pocket diapers from Fuzzi Bunz, Wonderoos, and Swaddle Bees.
If saving money is your top priority, prefold cloth diapers are the way to go. You can choose among a variety of sizes and thicknesses of cloth, and then you will have to fold it yourself and set it inside a waterproof diaper cover purchased separately. It’s not hard to do, but it’s not something that you can typically ask of a sitter or someone with less experience or time; so most parents who use prefold diapers also purchase a few AIOs to have around for daycare, sitters, or nights away from home.
