Firewire Port
by Staff Writer
FireWire® ports are being found in virtually every type of high quality digital device, including audio and video systems, DVD camcorders, digital cameras, and even printers and scanners. In each case, the reliability and speed of the FireWire® connection simplifies the previously complicated process of connecting digital devices to a computer, and to each other. Firewire® ports are even now being used in home entertainment systems. For example, many new camcorders that have a FireWire® port can be connected directly to DVD recorders, for instant and seamless video transfer.
Speed is, of course, the most important factor, but efficiency and reliability are also extremely important. Firewire® utilizes a new arbitration system that is extremely effective. For reliable data transfer to occur, Firewire® ports automatically determine the order of transfer packets, and this is an improvement over older models of sequential and orderly transfer.
In utilizing this system, Firewire® avoids one of the largest impediments to fast file transfer: data collision. Essentially, newer versions of Firewire® devices arbitrate impending data packets while current data packets are being sent, instead of waiting for each packet before beginning arbitration. It’s a revolutionary system that has allowed Firewire® to become one of the fastest data storage transfer mediums in the world today.
One area in which Firewire® connectivity is really making a difference is in business networking. Many companies are now using computers that have Firewire® technology, because of the speed and reliability of these connections. It’s a cost-effective way to share information between computers, on account of the long distances supported by Firewire® connectivity and its plug-and-play nature. Even the first model of Firewire® 400 is faster than the most modern Ethernet network systems, and that’s why many businesses are making the switch. It is for this reason that Synchrotech offers a variety of Firewire® ports and devices.
