What has been known as FireWire®, the IEEE 1394 port, is much more than an “industry-standard.” It is the fastest and highest bandwidth data transfer solution for peripheral devices, either connected to a computer or to each other. The IEEE 1394b port allows speeds up to 800 MB per second, and it can maintain these high data transfer rates for up to a distance of 100 meters.
FireWire® is incredibly powerful and subsequently every major electronics maker has started incorporating it into their devices, including Epson, HP, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, Canon, Maxtor, Pioneer, Iomega, and many others. They have adapted to FireWire® for the simple reason that it is the most advanced solution for transferring media files and other large amounts of data from one device to another.
Any kind of data, be it multimedia or not, can be transferred using a FireWire® medium. This includes data stored on external disk drives, Apple iPods and other MP3 players, DV digital camcorders, or through professional audio sound cards. Any application that requires a fast and reliable connection can be greatly enhanced by switching to FireWire®. IEEE 1394 ports are routinely found on electronics devices that consumers and businesses use every day.
Sometimes, it is adapting to the FireWire® standard that is difficult. Synchrotech has a large catalog of IEEE 1394 ports and converters. They also stock different FireWire® hubs, FireWire® to SCSI converters, FireWire® to USB 2.0 converters (or vice versa), and virtually any other adapter or FireWire® connector. They manufacture and distribute FireWire® cards, connectors, and peripherals.
