PCMCIA Card Reader

by Staff Writer

Technological innovations in PCMCIA component technology have allowed developers to increase the functionality of PC card readers. For instance, PCMCIA cards are now being made that can accomplish a number of key functions, like modem and local area network (LAN) connectivity. At the same time, all laptops and some desktops feature more than one PCMCIA card, because they realize that consumers see the value of the PCMCIA standard.

The differences in PCMCIA card readers are highlighted by the type of external device itself. For instance, PCMCIA Type I cards, which are 3.3 mm thick, are usually used as RAM, Flash or Compact Flash memory adapters, or one-time programmable microcontrollers (OTP).

PCMCIA Type II cards, which are 5 mm thick, are often used for system devices such as data or fax modems, LAN cards, or data storage devices. PCMCIA Type III cards are substantially thicker, at 10.5 mm. They are usually used for more intensive applications like rotating different data storage devices. Every PCMCIA card reader is specific to its card type. Synchrotech makes PCMCIA card readers that not only transfer Compact Flash and SmartCards to PCMCIA, but also PCMCIA cards to USB.

Newer releases of PCMCIA have started to incorporate power management into the PC card standard. This is important, because it means that a PCMCIA card reader is more efficient than ever, therefore increasing laptop battery life. Power efficiency was achieved by changing the processes through which PCMCIA card readers return to functionality after the laptop was suspended.
