PCMCIA Card
by Staff Writer
The miniaturization of personal computers and computer systems was inevitable. The ease and convenience which computers bring to consumers is only increased when those computers can be handheld. Primarily, it has been the development of the laptop computer which has really revolutionized the way that people do business, keep in touch with friends, and generally live their lives.
In the race to make laptop computers portable and adaptable to a variety of users, standards had to be developed which were conducive to multiple computer manufacturers. Thus, the PCMCIA standard was introduced. PCMCIA stands for Personal Computer Memory Card International Association, and it was founded to develop constants through which mobile computing would be standardized for all.
In today’s age, where laptops have been around for over 15 years, one forgets that, in the early days, laptops were highly proprietary. Each computer manufacturer had their own standards through which peripheral devices could be used. Today, the PCMCIA card standard makes it easy for device manufacturers to tailor their devices to most laptop makers in the world today.
This is incredibly powerful, because now you no longer have to worry if a modem card, external wireless card, PCMCIA video card, or any other peripheral device will or will not physically conform to your laptop. The rapid escalation of PC card technology is, in part, due to the PCMCIA organization and to companies dedicated to those efforts, like Synchrotech. It is one of their goals to manufacture and distribute high quality PC cards for a variety of uses, and assist those in different industries where PC cards can be used in horizontal and vertical implementation.
